Botox and fillers: two popular treatments that are often confused with each other. Not surprising, since they are both used to reduce signs of aging. Yet they differ substantially in their effect, application and result. In this blog we clearly explain the difference between botox and fillers, when to choose which treatment and why a personal treatment plan is essential for a natural result.

What is botox?

Botox is a brand name for botulinum toxin, a protein that temporarily reduces muscle activity. It is used in cosmetic medicine to soften dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. These wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle movements, and botox causes the muscles to relax.

The treatment is quick and virtually painless. Within a few days you will see the effect: a smoother, rested look without your facial expression disappearing. The results remain visible for an average of 3 to 5 months, after which you can safely repeat the treatment.

What are fillers?

Fillers are fillers based on hyaluronic acid; a substance native to the body that retains moisture and provides volume. They enhance contours, restore volume loss or fill in fine lines. Consider beautifying lips, accentuating cheekbones or softening the nasolabial fold.

The results of fillers are immediately visible: fuller lips, a fresher appearance or a tighter jawline. Depending on the area treated, the effect usually remains visible for 6 to 12 months. Fillers are temporary, naturally degradable and safe to use when placed by an experienced doctor.

The main differences at a glance

Although botox and fillers are both cosmetic injectables, they work in completely different ways and are used for different purposes. Below you can see the main differences at a glance:

Which treatment suits you?

Whether botox or filler is a better fit for you depends on your needs, skin type and facial structure. Do you want to soften expression-related wrinkles such as frown or forehead wrinkles? Then botox is often the most effective choice. Instead, are you looking for more volume, such as in your lips, cheeks or jawline? Then fillers are more appropriate. In some cases, a combination of both treatments is ideal, such as for a fresher but natural look.
