Rejuran vs. PolyPhil: Which One Do We Use and Why?

Polynucleotides, also known as Salmon DNA, have become one of the most sought-after treatments in recent years for skin that has started to look thinner, drier, or more tired. If you look into them further, you’ll quickly come across two names: Rejuran and PolyPhil. Both are polynucleotide treatments, but they are not the same products. In this blog, we’ll explain what they have in common, how they differ, and how our doctors at Aepril Clinics make their recommendations.

The active ingredient

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are purified DNA fragments, usually derived from salmon or trout. They are administered into the skin via small injections to support the skin’s natural repair processes. This includes collagen and elastin production, hydration, and the skin’s overall structure.

Polynucleotides do not add volume directly, as fillers do. They do not change the shape of your face, but rather focus on improving skin quality. The effects and scientific basis of these DNA fragments are discussed in greater detail in our article on what polynucleotides are and how they work.

Rejuran

Rejuran: The Most Well-Known Polynucleotide

Rejuran is considered one of the first well-known polynucleotide products for skin improvement and has been used as a skin booster since 2014. At Aepril Clinics, we use Rejuran by Vivacy, which comes in two variants:

  • Rejuran I: specifically designed for the thin, delicate skin around the eyes. Think of fine lines, crepey skin, and a tired appearance.
  • Rejuran Healer: designed to improve the skin on the face, with a focus on hydration, elasticity, and smoother skin.

A course of treatment usually consists of 2 to 3 sessions. Each session lasts about 10 to 20 minutes, and the results remain visible for an average of 6 to 12 months, depending on your skin and lifestyle. The exact duration varies from person to person and also depends on the number of treatments.

PolyPhil

PolyPhil: Face, Eyes, and Hair

PolyPhil is also a polynucleotide treatment using salmon DNA. At Aepril Clinics, we use three variants, tailored to the treatment area: PolyPhil Face for facial skin, PolyPhil Eyes for the skin around the eyes, and PolyPhil Hair for hair and the scalp.

With PolyPhil, too, the results develop gradually. You won’t see an immediate change like you would with a filler, but in the weeks following the treatment, your skin may feel smoother, better hydrated, and firmer. On average, the effect lasts 6 to 12 months. PolyPhil Face, specifically designed for the face, is used primarily to improve skin quality without adding extra volume.

The Comparison

Rejuran or PolyPhil: What’s the Difference?

Both treatments are based on polynucleotides and share the same goal: to improve the skin from within without directly adding volume. That’s why, on paper, they appear very similar.

As far as is known, there are no major studies that directly compare Rejuran and PolyPhil. The differences lie primarily in the products themselves—such as their composition, concentration, and the way the gel is manufactured—and in the variants available for a specific area.

In the scientific literature, a distinction is also made between polynucleotides (PN, longer chains) and PDRN (shorter fragments). Brochures and packaging do not always clearly explain exactly what you are getting. Therefore, ask your doctor which formulation is used and why it is suitable for your skin.

Personalized treatment advice

Which one do we use, and why?

At Aepril Clinics, we work with both product lines. We choose based on what your skin needs. During the consultation, the doctor will assess:

  • The treatment area: the skin around the eyes requires a different approach than the skin on the cheeks.
  • Skin quality: the thickness, firmness, and overall condition of your skin.
  • Previous treatments: how your skin has responded to them.
  • Your goals and schedule: the results you’re looking for and the treatment plan that best suits them.
  • Product information: the composition, origin, and suitability for the selected area.

This way, you’ll receive treatment recommendations tailored to your skin and preferences. Sometimes we recommend a different type of skin enhancement treatment, such as Profhilo or Belotero Revive. The doctor will explain the differences and help you make a decision.

Eligibility

Who is a good candidate for a polynucleotide treatment?

Polynucleotide treatment is primarily aimed at improving skin quality. You may want to consider this treatment if:

  • Your skin feels thinner, drier, or less supple.
  • You notice fine lines or crepey skin, for example under the eyes.
  • You want to improve your skin without visible added volume.
  • You’re looking for a subtle result that develops gradually.

Not every type of dark circles has the same cause. If they’re caused by thin skin, a polynucleotide treatment may help. If they’re caused by pigmentation or shadows resulting from volume loss, a different treatment may be more appropriate. The doctor will assess this during the consultation.

When is the treatment not recommended?

A polynucleotide treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and is not suitable if you have an active skin infection at the treatment site or a known allergy to the product. Do you have a fish allergy? Always mention this in advance so the doctor can carefully assess the composition and suitability of the treatment.

Results and Aftercare

What can you expect after the treatment?

Immediately after treatment, redness, swelling, small bumps, tenderness, or bruising may be visible at the injection sites. The bumps usually subside on their own. The results develop gradually: in the weeks following treatment, the skin may become smoother and more resilient. With some treatments, the first noticeable results become visible after about 2 to 4 weeks. The full results depend in part on the number of sessions.

What should you keep in mind after treatment?

For a full recovery, we recommend the following aftercare:

  • Touch the treated area as little as possible for the first 24 hours.
  • Do not apply makeup or cream to the injection sites for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for the first 24 hours.
  • Postpone saunas, tanning beds, and other cosmetic treatments on the treated area for two weeks.

Always follow the post-treatment care instructions provided by your treating physician. After your procedure, you can schedule a free follow-up appointment at Aepril Clinics. If you experience any persistent or unexpected symptoms, please contact the clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Rejuran and PolyPhil

Is Rejuran better than PolyPhil?

Not necessarily. Both products contain polynucleotides and are designed to improve skin quality. Which treatment is best for you depends on the treatment area, your skin condition, and the product’s composition. During the consultation, the doctor will determine which option is appropriate.

What is the difference between Rejuran and PolyPhil?

Rejuran and PolyPhil are both treatments based on polynucleotides. The differences include the product formulation and the available variants. Aepril Clinics uses Rejuran I and Healer for the eyes and face, and PolyPhil Face, Eyes, and Hair for the face, eye area, and scalp.

How long do the results of Rejuran or PolyPhil last?

According to Aepril Clinics’ treatment information, the results remain visible for an average of 6 to 12 months after a course of treatment. The exact duration of the results varies from person to person and depends, among other things, on skin condition, lifestyle, and the number of treatments. Follow-up treatments may be necessary.

Are Rejuran and PolyPhil fillers?

No, Rejuran and PolyPhil are polynucleotide treatments designed to improve skin quality. They do not provide the immediate volumizing effect of a hyaluronic acid filler. The treatment supports processes in the skin that can contribute to hydration, elasticity, and a smoother skin texture.
